The numbers 1, 2, 3, 4...... used for counting are called natural numbers. The capital letter N is used to denote the natural numbers. By including the number zero, we get the numbers 0, 1, 2, 3, 4..... called whole numbers. The capital letter W is used to denote whole numbers.

The whole number is basically classified in to two, even and odd numbers. In this section we will be learning more about even numbers.

A whole number is called even if it is exactly divisible by 2. Whole number 0 , 2, 4, 6, 8,...are even numbers, because each is divisible by 2.

or

A whole number ending with 2, 4, 6, 8 or 0 is called as an even number.
Zero divisible by 2 is zero.
An integer that is of form $n = 2k$ is called as an even number. Here $k$ can take any integer value. All even numbers are integers.

Properties of even numbers

1. Even number + Even number = Even number

example: $8 + 10 = 18$

2. Even number - Even number = Even number

example: $26 + 24 =50$

3. Even number $\times$ Even number = Even number

example : $12 \times 4$ = $48$

4. Even number $\div$ Even number = Even number

example : $36 \div 12$ = $4$
